We repair lots of Shake roofs, we recently got called out to do repairs on a shake roof that had just been repaired the previous year. When we arrived it was obvious why the repairs had failed. Below left are the shims the Contractor had used. To save time and money, they take regular shims and split them into little slivers. Then because they are so tiny, as soon as the shims dry a little they shrink and fall out.
